A mother of a spirited five-year-old, felt overwhelmed and hopeless when her son, Owen, erupted in anger.
His outbursts—hitting, kicking, throwing objects, and swearing at her—left her feeling fearful and disconnected from him. Despite trying numerous parenting books and workshops, nothing seemed to help.
She was in deep despair, anxious about the next trigger.
Her goal for therapy was to feel confident in managing Owen’s emotional outbursts and to create a sense of peace and predictability at home, enabling them to strengthen their bond.
Through play therapy, Owen and his mum gained valuable insights into their interactions and their relationship with emotions. This led, to new ways of relating to each other and to their emotions.
After three months of dedicated work, Owen learned to express his anger in healthier ways, with outbursts now lasting only minutes instead of the previous 30minutes or more.
Most importantly, he no longer directed his that anger at her.
Now, she feels confident when he gets triggered, able to help him navigate his emotions rather than feeling helpless. Their relationship flourished; their interaction in the therapy room shifted to joy and playfulness, significantly deepening their connection.
