Adult Anxiety Therapy: From feeling controlled by anxiety to developing insight and steadiness -

Through reflective psychotherapy, he recognised the protective function of anxiety and developed confidence in responding with self-care and clarity.

Doug is a 50-year-old professional manager who sought therapy due to anxiety issues. Having been divorced five years prior and with adult children, he often felt out of control when anxiety surfaced.

Throughout our sessions, Doug gained a deeper understanding of his anxiety. He learned to identify the triggers, listen to his body’s inner wisdom, and recognise the purpose behind the anxiety.

Doug discovered that his “inner self” was there to protect him from burnout and to encourage him to focus on self-care, helping him avoid the potential downward spiral.

With this knowledge, he was able to apply the brakes when anxiety arose and focus on his self care practices he learned in therapy.

As a result of these insights, Doug no longer feels controlled or fearful of his anxiety.

Instead, he respects its positive intent and is able to negotiate with himself about when to engage in self-care practices. This transformation has significantly improved his overall wellbeing.
