A caring and academically gifted 15-year-old girl came to therapy feeling deeply alone. Despite having so much love to give and a genuine tenderness for animals and the people around her, she felt stuck in her internal world. Her parents brought her to see me after discovering she had been self-harming, and in our early sessions she shared that she was also experiencing suicidal thoughts.
Her goal in therapy was not to learn strategies or tools, but simply to have a safe space, somewhere she could be heard, seen, and understood without pressure or judgment.
We met weekly over nine months, gently exploring her inner world at a pace that felt right for her. Together, we unpacked the emotions beneath her pain, and I offered consistent empathy and understanding. In parallel, I supported her mum with guidance on how to listen with compassion at home, helping her daughter feel more emotionally held in her everyday environment.
Over time, this safe, steady support allowed her to reconnect with others. She slowly built a close, loving group of friends who valued her deeply. She stopped self-harming, and when I asked her during our second-last session about suicidal thoughts, she paused before saying she didn’t even remember the last time she’d had one.
By the end of our work together, she felt more connected, more supported, and no longer alone, a profound shift that opened the door to healing, hope, and meaningful relationships.
