Child Therapy for School Refusal: From distress at the school gate to calm, predictable mornings -

Psychotherapist for Childen Hills Castle Hill Sydney

With attachment-based child therapy and parent coaching, her morning distress decreased by 80%, creating calmer transitions and a stronger sense of safety.

A playful and affectionate eight-year-old girl began therapy due to ongoing school refusal. Despite her bright and bubbly personality, the daily struggle of getting to school had become overwhelming for both her and her mum. Mornings were filled with tears and distress, leaving her mum unsure how to ease the separation.

As we explored her experience more deeply, it became clear that her difficulty separating each morning was less about school itself and more about her attachment needs.

She needed to feel safe, connected, and held emotionally before she could confidently step into the day.

Her mum’s goal was simple but profound: to support her daughter with compassion, empathy and body based regulation techniques when the morning battles started.

In therapy, we focused on strengthening their attachment. Through a mix of guided and child led play sessions and parent training and coaching, her mum learned to attune more closely to her daughter’s emotional cues, regulate her nervous system with co-regulation techniques, and listen empathically so her daughter was able to process her emotions.

As these shifts took place, school attendance steadily improved. Her crying at the school gate reduced by 80%, and mornings became significantly more predictable and peaceful. Her mum now feels confident and empowered, knowing how to support her daughter without resorting to forceful strategies. Their relationship has grown stronger, grounded in connection, trust, and emotional safety.
